The Winter Build-Out Race Begins: Reactors Against the Calendar

REYKJAVÍK — On the commissioning floor of Aurora Fusion Works' newest baseload unit, the clock on the wall is not telling the time; it is counting down to the cold. The temperate north's heating peak arrives on the year's stillest, darkest nights, and every reactor that reaches the grid before then is a night the system does not spend afraid. So the build-out has become a race against the calendar, and the calendar does not negotiate. "We can lose weeks to a bad weld or a slow inspection, and we cannot get them back, because winter is not waiting on our schedule," said Aurora chief executive Emeka Okonkwo, who has spent the month moving between three sites at once. Fusion already carries close to a third of the reconnected grid; the question this autumn is whether the new units clear their commissioning gauntlet — the safety holds, the slow deliberate ramp — in time to answer the first hard freeze. Okonkwo refuses to skip a step to win the race. "The temptation every year is to rush the last reactor over the line. That is exactly the reactor you must not rush." The crews work the cool hours and the warm ones both now. Against them runs a season that has never once been late.
