The anomaly holds at plus-two-point-eight. Each of these is offered, correctly, as evidence that nothing sudden has happened — and each is, on a longer reading, the problem stated as its own comfort. We have built a civilization fluent in the language of the gradual, and fluency has costs. A number that rises the same amount every month reads, after a while, like weather: real, unwelcome, and nobody's emergency.
